W3C Markup Validation
What does the HTML Validation check prove?
Web sites are displayed by browsers which interpret the markup
to display the pages. The visual appearance of the web site depends
on how the browser interprets the markup commands. The web site
may not appear the same to people using different browsers.
Further differences will arise if errors are encountered; the browsers
may take different routes as they 'degrade' - the method by which
they attempt to negate the effects of the error.
Ensuring the markup is valid is one way (perhaps one of the first) in
achieving a web site that can be effectively displayed by a variety of
browsers.

Style Sheet Validation
Cascading Style Sheets facilitate the production of a consistent set of
documents. On web sites it enables the display characteristic to be defined
in one place - and to be overridden by the user, if required, at one place.
By ensuring that the recognised standards for production and presentation
are observed, a web author strives to produce web pages acceptable
to a wide variety of web browsers and a broad spectrum of end-user
requirements.
This web author would like to know that he has succeeded but
will settle for knowing when he fails.
